Japanese sunscreen rec for Black and Brown skin people

Summer is upon us (as you can tell by the heat 🥵) so I wanted to share my sunscreen recommendation for any Black, Brown skinned, or even just people on the tanner side. I know it can be a hassle looking for sunscreen here that doesn’t leave a white cast or that’s marketed as “whitening”.

I’m a Black woman who uses the Suncut UV perfect gel (comes in a yellowish bottle) and the Suncut Prodefense UV Milk (silver bottle). Both are from KOSE. The gel is a chemical type so i use it under my moisturizer and the milk is mineral type so i use it for touch ups throughout the day! You can find them both at most drug stores and they both leave no white cast. They blend into my skin perfectly. And best of all they’re not expensive at all!

Stay safe and hydrated everyone!

  1. Another good guide is to buy the stuff marketed to children. It tends to be very neutral/safe.

  2. I just use whatever the old ladies are buying. I’ve been 12-14h out in the sun and gotten away with only minor touch ups.

  3. I have a secret that has worked for me the past few years. I only go out at evening/night.

Daytime is for staying underneath the AC with the fan blowing on me.

  4. I’m the color of mayonnaise but I usually use Nivea Water Gel (blue bottle.)

It is not really a cream, so doesn’t leave the white stuff on you.
Absorbs into my skin well and I don’t seem to sweat it out as fast as most of the stuff I have tried.
I don’t think it is whitening, or even if it was I wouldn’t notice.

    About 800-1000yen in drug stores.

I mostly just cover up and avoid the sun as much as humanly possible.
I am not a fan of sunscreen at all, but it is a necessary evil.

  5. Check iherb. I sont really use sunblock but I think iherb will have more melanin friendly options vs a regular degular 薬

  6. I use Biore’s UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence since it doesn’t leave me looking like a ghost.

  7. I order all of our sunscreen on iherb. I order clear zinc usually so we don’t have a white cast on our face. Im not sure how how well it works on darker skinned people but it does seem to absorb clear. Also thinksport has a tinted sunscreen and supergoop if you’re willing to throw so down the money.

  8. Shiseido anessa gel blended into my skin perfectly. It’s a ‘sports’ sunscreen so it is kind of difficult to get off, but is very sweat proof.

  9. Have you looked into UPF clothing yet? I think it’s easier to be consistent and have more coverage with a mix of UV blocking clothing and sunscreen.

  10. Chemical sunscreens, in general, leave no whitecast.
If you want a mineral/zinc oxide sunscreen, be prepared to blend forever 😅

  11. Does sunscreen actually work? I recall using it during my teenage years but I don’t think it had any effect. Perhaps the sunscreen I was using was weak. Nonetheless I’m pretty skeptical about sunscreen.
