Many here I am sure love to play video games, Japanese and foreigner alike. What are some JRPGs (Japanese role playing games) that you have played and enjoyed and would recommend to others to try.
For me I picked up Rune factory 4 and can’t get enough.
Of course questions are welcomed if you have an interest in trying one but haven’t yet.

Suikoden 1 and 2. Oldies, but for me nothing better has been made since them.
Also FF6 is on the podium.
Xenogears
Persona 5 The Royal. The music and gameplay are 11/10 and the story is also pretty interesting. Good characters and loads of stuff to do.
Any of the shin megami tensei series of games are quality!
Bravely Default
RGG 7
Persona 3 Reload is being release next year. For me P3 is the best game ever and this is a hill I’ll die on.
Rune factory 4 is the goat. So sad 5 just didn’t live up to the hype. Fortunately there’s some new ones coming.. And 3 is about to be remastered.
Would also advise persona 5 royal for sure and the nier series!
I’ve been enjoying the hell out of Octopath Traveler recently. Good ol’ classic jrpg turn-based combat, and the game is gorgeous. If you like it, it’s got a sequal out as well, which I hear is even better than the first.
The only JRPG I’ve enjoyed was persona 5, which is also the only one I’ve ever played

The yakuza’s series, but it’s not exactly a JRPG.
Also the Fire Emblem, and the Suikoden are great.
I like the tales series. I don’t think they’re very well known though. My favourite is Tales of Xillia but I do have a soft spot for Graces as cheesy as it was lol
If ps2 Rogue Galaxy is a total fucking sleeper. Couldn’t believe I’d never heard of it. Absolute masterpiece.
(To grind you can put an elastic band on the controller toggles to run in circles. ;D )
Lately I’ve been playing a lot of Genshin. Gacha games suck but damnit I like this game. I miss the rpgs of yesteryear! Still Genshin is a good game. It’s a Chinese game but just put in Japanese for the language and *bam* jrpg
Also going to suggest Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne. It’s a persona game so hard to describe but it’s cool af. It’s also one of my students favorite games, he freaked out when he found out I played it
Final Fantasy 7
I played the original and the remake is pretty great as well.
Personally, I love the story.

Going through Death End Re:Quest 1 and 2 atm and the ‘enemy pingpong’ mechanic is strangely addicting. The story part is in VN format and managed to hook me in so far.
Any final fantasy
New one coming out this week! I’m hyped
If the Atelier series counts I’m a fan… and Zelda isn’t exactly JRPG but it is Japanese… Persona series, Shin Megami Tensei series, Yakuza series (is it actually JRPG), FF series, Tales, Suikoden, The World Ends With You (wait is that JRPG), YS series, Grandia series, Fire Emblem series… The PS2, PS3, and Nintendo DS in my opinion are full of JRPG gems. There’s a lot more that I played, some only in Japanese and I haven’t the faintest idea of their name anymore, but they were good too and on one of these three consoles.
Xenoblade series.
If you’re looking for something new I recommend ASTLIBRA Revision.
It’s a indie game but I played it for 65+ hours. The combat is just too good and satisfying. Also the story is interesting and not generic. The game deserves more attention than it currently receives.
