Social hierarchy in language

Hi! I heard that in japanese language there are several degrees of speaking to people who are on your level, below you or above your level. Can you give me some examples how it works? Thanks, I am just curious.

  1. You use polite words for people above you and casual words for friends or people below you. Sounds like you’ve got it down already.

  2. The same as you were speaking to my Puerto Rican grandma . You wouldn’t speak to her as if you were sitting in a bar am I correct. You show respect and be polite! Once you know your place in the world it gets easier!
