Anyone knows a good gym/personal trainer in Kyoto?

Hello everyone,

I’ve gained weight during covid and I finally feel like tackling this issue. I’ve been looking around on the internet for a personal trainer in Kyoto, but everything I’ve found is either for super weight loss programs (I only need to lose a few kgs) or for people already working out.

I was wondering if anyone knows a good personal trainer/gym in Kyoto which is beginner friendly and not super expensive. I speak Japanese fluently so language is not an issue.

Thank you guys in advance!

  1. You may also want to try asking in /r/Kyoto.

  2. If you are only looking to lose a few kgs then I don’t think you need a personal trainer. A personal trainer can be really expensive and require reservations hence I suggest you just go to the gym and do some cardio either on the treadmill or cycling chair. At the gym, other gym folk may give you advice and assistance, if they feel so inclined, freely. Most gyms charge a monthly subscription fee but some others charge based on minutes/hours spent at the gym.

  3. If you want to lose weight, eat less. Exercise only plays a negligible role when losing weight for most people. If you really want to spend money, look for a dietitian, not a personal coach.

  4. If it’s for people already working out, I’m sure they can accomodate and help you too. PTs usually help you figure out diet plans and routines, and even if you are doing pure powerlifting you won’t get big unless you eat to get big.

  5. Lost 30lbs here. Exercise was never the answer eating healthier 80% of the time was the answer and knowing what calories are and how much you need is the key. I exercised a lot initially and I just ate more garbage and gained weight.

  6. Calculate TDEE, eat 500 calories below that, set a daily step goal (like 8k, 10k, 12k, that you can achieve daily, even if apps aren’t accurate this is just a general guideline to keep your daily activity in check)

Weigh daily in the morning, when weight stalls for a period of time (like 4-7 days) lower calories by another 100, repeat until you’ve lost desired amount

Create a spreadsheet where you enter the following stats daily: Steps done, Calories consumed, Weight, how your appetite and cravings were (i.e High appetite but low cravings, low appetite but craving x meal)

You don’t necessarily need a PT or an online coach for this, and with the information logged in the spreadsheet you’re able to keep track of how you’ve felt without leaving it to a guessing game

  7. Easy!

    Follow these steps.

    1. Go to gym.
    2. Look for someone taking personal training lessons.
    3. Copy what they are doing.
    4. ???????
    5. Profit.

  8. You need to diet for weight loss, not exercise.

I mean. You should exercise anyway but it is only gonna help you lose weight if you dial in your diet.

And personal trainers are generally crap. The only real benefit is that paying them money incentivises you to exercise so you’re not wasting your money.

Just keep a food diary to record all of the calories you eat/drink and you will be 90% of the he way to weight loss.
