Vegan Recommendations & Itinerary Check: 8 Days in September – Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima

Hello everyone,

This is a work-in-progress itinerary for a September trip to Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima. This is only one week out of a larger Japan trip, most of which will be spent with family in Aichi. I am mostly concerned about doing too much in a day, dealing with the heat, and keeping each days activities in an order/geographic location that makes sense. Any tips/critiques would be greatly appreciated! Also, any recommendations for vegan food around these areas would be fantastic. Thanks!

  1. Check out Paprika Shokudo in Osaka, not too far from your hotel. We went two days in a row because the food was so good. I still dream about their vegan karaage.

Taiko Udon in Hiroshima was good, and the novelty of vegan okonomiyaki was fun at Nagataya though I would say I enjoyed it more for the experience than top quality food.

Shigetsu in Tenryu-ji temple in Arashiyama is a lovely experience all around – excellent food and beautiful surroundings.

  2. I am there in a month’s time in July and I am vegetarian/semi-vegan so looking forward to all the responses for Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.

  3. Kyoto is great for vegan food, I saw a lot of spots proudly advertising their vegan dishes on posters just walking around town. Specifically though I had a great experience at Mamezen ramen in Kyoto (I think it’s called Towzen now, according to google?). Be aware that not everything is vegan, only select dishes, so it’s something to keep in mind if you prefer to dine at vegan-only establishments. But their soy milk ramen is out of this world; went for lunch and immediately made a dinner reservation for that night 🙂

  4. Otis! is a Tex-Mex restaurant in Hiroshima with a bunch of vegan and gluten free options. Sometimes they have live music.
