Need advice on alternative payment methods (Line Pay, Waon, Nanaco, etc.)

Hello everyone,

Ok so i have an issue with one of my credit card and the other isn’t able to get cash from ATMs which very annoying here in japan.
I’m looking for the best alternative payment method there is in Japan, because i basically cannot retreive cash at all (i can only pay by card).

I’ve looked on vending machine to see what kind of smart wallet you can use but there is an overwhelming amount so i really don’t know what to look into.

Ideally i want either a Phone App that you can pay with NFC or QR code scan, or some sort of card that you can easily put money on(using a credit card) in a konbinis for example.

There is an equivalent in Korea called TMoney which works like this, you can buy a card on convenience stores, you put money on it, and you can pay for basically anything(transports, restaurants, vending macchines, anything). Do you guys know the best equivalent to TMoney in Japan ?

I was thinking of Line Pay as well but i don’t know if it satisfy my requirements(idk if you can pay for the bus, or restaurants for example).

So yeah, basically i’m looking for the best alternatives to cash there is in Japan, i’m taking any advice.

Thanks for your time.

  1. Where have you tried the ATM? Anything with Visa Plus or MasterCard Cirrus should work at convenience store ATM machine.

As someone living in Japan, I am not aware of any QR or NFC based payment that allow you to charge by credit card. Even if you can charge at convenience store, it’s cash only. Also all QR code payment I know require residency in Japan — they are not available to foreign tourists.

In addition to that, most train and bus only accept cash or transportation IC card, which, again, can only be charged by cash (unless it’s mobile Suica/Pasmo). Restaurant are more varied. QR-based payment works at most chain and some store, but not all.
