I’ve been in Japan for about 6 months. Up till now, my monthly health insurance premium has been around 2000 yen a month. My understanding is that they base the amount off of your last year’s salary in Japan, and since I wasn’t here last year, I just get charged the minimum amount.
I just recieved the June to December slips in the mail and they’re around 10,000 yen a month. I’m confused about the sudden jump in cost since I wasn’t in the country in 2022.
Does anyone have any insight on this?
Note: I’m working full-time at an eikaiwa.

2000 yen because thats the minimum if you haven’t worked previous year or didn’t earn enough to be taxed.
If you have not worked previous year, and it’s 10,000 /month, then you did not file a tax return.
If you’re working full time at an eikaiwa, then you shouldn’t be paying NHI but should be on shakai hoken.
