I have been working at a chain Eikaiwa for around 8 years. It has honestly been a pretty decent job until recently. We got a new district manager in April who has been making the job unbearable (forcing unpaid overtime, name calling, micro-managing, etc.)
I started looking for a different job, and got an offer pretty quickly. Lower pay, but more freedom.
My problem is, my current contract (Eikawa job) is until Mid-Sept. The new job contract would start late August (not much wiggle room.) I could technically use all of my PTO and start the new job, but I have read that this could cause some problems.
I could also put in my notice. Officially ending my contract mid August, but using my PTO to make my last actual day of work July 31st (or so)
If I finish my current contract, I would get my contract completion bonus (210K), and good standing, but I will probably have issues with “double-employment.”
If I put in notice, I suspect my new manager will try to make my life hell, albeit, temporarily. I would forfeit my completion bonus, but at least avoid some of the issues with overlapping jobs.
Questions:
1. Is it worth it to give up the completion bonus to avoid the trouble associated with having overlapping jobs?
2. If I am resigning, I suspect my manager will at the very least try to say I can use 2 weeks of PTO all at once. Disrupting business operations and such. Do I have a right to use my PTO all at the end, or could I be made to use them whenever the company says is okay.
3. If I am resigning, I would technically be unemployed for about a week. What should I do about residence tax, health insurance, pension for just one week?
4. Any other things I haven’t considered?
Any advice is appreciated. It’s a stressful time and I’m just trying not to miss anything.

Any way you can negotiate a later start with the new company? Honestly not something I recommend (you should always prioritize your next company) but you make it seem that the contract bonus is really important to you so eh.
Either way don’t make it so that the jobs overlap unless you want both places to hate you.
Also it is always recommended to end a job at the end of a month in order to not have to deal with pension and health insurance.
1. Yes probably
2. Gray zone and very case by case. You have to negotiate with your manager and/or HR
3. follow above advice I think. If you really need to, speak with a lawyer because missing any tax or insurance payment by even 1 day will affect future visa renewals, but if you are PR already then whatever
