Renewed residence card and might need to go to the hospital, new NHI card still hasn’t arrived, can I still go?

I just got a new resident card, my previous one, along with my National Health Insurance card and My Number Card, expired in late May. I know a new NHI card should be arriving soon, but I think I might have to go to the hospital / my clinic this weekend. Can I still go and be covered by the NHI?

  1. I could be wrong but as far as I have been told, you can go. You will have to pay but when you get your card, you go back to get reimbursed. Different clinics might have different rules about that though.

  2. If there is no change to your information (employer/account number, etc), they might just look the other way or some sort of system check.

When do you expect to receive the new notification card? If you go to somewhere and pay the full amount due to lack of card, but return in the same calendar month, they can refund the difference right there. I’m not sure what the process is for claiming a refund in the following month, but it is possible.

Do you have your MyNumber photocard? Some places are now set-up to accept that as your insurance card.

  3. You might be able to have the doctors office front desk staff call the health department of city hall for you and ask if you’ll be covered and what to do.

  4. Update for future reference: I can totally feel the upcoming medical situation, so I decided to leave work early and rush to the City Hall. Got there just in time (before 4pm) and they were able to renew my 被保険者証 / paper NHI card till September 30 2023. The process took like 20 minutes. It’s valid only for about three months, so I believe they really want people to move onto using MyNumber cards.
