I haven’t been paying taxes up until now dues to various situations and general lack of understanding how to do it.
My question is – **is it possible to file taxes well after the deadline?**
I’m not expecting to OWE so I don’t think I’ll owe interest on that or anything, but I would like to get money back that I’m owed if possible and also be squared away on taxes.
What would be the best way to go about this (such as first thing to do)?
Thank in advance for any advice!
Edit: The taxes are here in Japan taxes. Worked for a few different companies, but never for myself. Was going to file taxes but didn’t save any original forms from work (like the end of year tax forms and such).

Taxes for which country? If it’s Japan you should get your bills in the mail. Just pay them at the konbini. If it’s for the US then you’ll have some catch up paperwork to do, maybe a late fee and hopefully the IRS doesn’t get angry at you. I’m not an expert on taxes. If something is done wrong on your taxes you’ll be notified. Lots of guides online for how to do your taxes. Free version of TurboTax helps too
You don’t provide enough information.
The process differs depending on whether you’re working for yourself or someone else…
In any event, I’d recommend inquiring here:

I have always done my taxes late and it has never been an issue so far. Not that I’m encouraging doing it late, but I haven’t had any problems with it.
I think you need the end of year tax slips from each company in order to file your taxes. Maybe try contacting the companies you work at and asking them if they can send you another copy. I heard you can file late but there’s a penalty to do so which is percentage-based. Better to get the tax slips and go to the tax office and ask for help doing the forms. It’s fairly straightforward.
As far as I know there is a 5 year(maybe 7) leeway where you can make adjustments to your reported income.
So even if you did file it, you can go back and adjust it later. I was told this when I didn’t add the Furusato Nozei to my taxes a few yrs ago. I couldn’t be bothered to go back and fix it.
About 5 yrs ago I applied for PR and found out that when I moved cities, the new city didn’t receive any info about my income for just one yr and couldn’t give me any tax documents that I needed. I went back and showed them I did file my taxes and they sent me a huge bill. City tax, nhi and income tax. I paid it and got the certificate that I needed.
If you didn’t file anything, the city, nhi and tax department all want your money.
You can file late you’ll pay penalties and late interest. If you don’t file and don’t pay, if they don’t figure out , fine for you. But they have 5 years to find you…
