Dormitory internet (shugakuin)

Hey! I wanted to ask if any students who have been to the shugakuin dormitory could give an estimate of the internet speed on the dormitory.

I stream regularly (even though i suck) and its something that i really don’t wanna stop doing, but I don’t want to bring my desktop pc and go through all the trouble of transportation if the internet is not gonna be good enough for that.

Thank you very much in advance!

  1. Many universities have the official policy that you’re supposed to use the internet for university stuff. At my previous dorm, some students got in trouble for using too much bandwidth. But this was before corona.

  2. I’m assuming you’re talking about Kyoto University’s dormitory. I stayed at Misasagi in 2016 and it was super slow because they had an ancient router. I think the other dorms are alright though and if not must have upgraded their internet during Covid for online classes. There weren’t any policies about internet usage or streaming. You could always get a pocket WiFi or sth if it’s slow, but you can’t get a private wired connection. Don’t get softbank air, it’s horrible.

  3. Most of the internet facilities in the dormitory are less than 100M bps.

This is much slower than the communication speed of modern smartphones. However, only being able to use it for free and unlimited things have enough benefits for you. If you are dissatisfied with the speed of communication, please borrow NTT DoCoMo’s mobile home router. It’s 4,950 yen per month, and the terminal equipment is about 40,000 yen, but it’s much faster than the communication speed of the dormitory.
