Moving around Japan

Hey guys!

I’m currently living in Japan for the past 2 months under the working holiday visa. I’m here for a total of 12 months and moving around 1 month at a time.

I’m just curious as to if it were you guys how would you go about this. Where would you move for each month of all 12 months whether it’s what prefecture or city and considering things like weather, season, and possibly things happening in that area 🙂

  1. Hokkaido in the summer, Kyushu/Okinawa in the winter, otherwise somewhere in between.

  2. Tokyo for 12 months. Make friends and hang out with them.

Had a guy in our friend group who did this and he was a great guy to hang out with until he left.

  3. Follow the Cherry Blossoms from Kyushu to Hokkaido like Will Ferguson did in the book “Hokkaido Highway Blues: Hitchhiking Japan”.

  4. Hokkaido/Hiking in autumn around late September/October is nice, Hiroshima/Cycling in Shimanami Kaido around October. Miyazaki for surfing and Kagoshima during November.

Maybe work a bit during the winter like either in Hakuba, Nagano or Niseko, Hokkaido. After winter see the cherry blossoms in Tohoku region. (Take the ferry from Hokkaido to Niigata or Sendai.) ferry is cheap and is a pleasant experience, not a popular way of traveling in Japan however it’s nice being on an overnight ferry and enjoying the slow journey.

I would say for spring time after seeing some cherry blossoms maybe go to Tokushima for some water rafting, they have the best (strongest) rivers there.
