As the title says I’m planning to go on holiday to Germany for a week, I’ve been trying to look up the rules around this re-entry permission but the English language can be unclear on some sites. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this and can explain it simply? What’s the procedure basically?

there’s a little card/paper you fill out before going through immigration on your way out. they’ll keep part and staple the other part in your passport
At the airport, get a “special re-entry permit”. Fill it out with the correct info. Give it to the people at immigration on your way out. They will staple it into your passport.
Thanks for your answers, seems pretty simple then.

Yeah I had the same issue but I visited the UK back in March for a week and basically its:
As long as you’re coming back within a year, you just full in the little re-entry card thing (including your departing flight and returning flight), give it to immigration on your way out, they’ll ask when you’re planning to come back (just in case the date is wrong) and then once everything is fine they staple that into your passport and send you on your way.
When you return, you just give your passport at Japanese immigration and they’ll check that little card and you’ll be back in Japan assuming you filled it in correctly (which you probably did if immigration waved you through at time of departure out of Japan).
Consider yourself lucky since back in March we still had to contend with the whole COVID-19 vaccine/negative test result certificate thing 🙂
