[Incoming student] What can I do with the transport ?

Hello,

I am finishing the process to get my VISA and I was thinking where I should live.I will join Keio University on 1st April (roughly) and will stay for about 4.5 months. They gave me the choice for the dorm.I choosed one next to keio (about 10min’s walk) but I am not sure this the right move. It is located about 1h to the center of Tokyo and needs 2 different trams (It is Motosumiyoshi Residence next to yagami campus, from google maps, it’s about 500 yens for the outward journey). Of course, the other dorms are further.

My agenda is composed of 3 to 5hours over 2 days. I do not know if there are a lot of things to do next to Keio so I feel that I should find something closer. The problem is most of the time, they are asking for an entrance gift for any location (dont remember the exact word, I am pretty sure you see what I mean). Most of the time, 2 to 3 rents. Moreover, they are also asking for at least 6 months..

To be honest, I do not know what can I do because I will stay 4 months and I feel it is not worth it for me to pay this git. Nevertheless, if I would like to go 3 days a week to tokyo, it is about 500yens\*3\*2 = 3k yens => 12k yens a month.

I know there are subscriptions (my understanding is still unclear though) but I would use to 2 different tram systems (one extern to tokyo and the metro line). If you have any suggestion to carry out my problem, I am glad to hear it.

Thanks for you help guys.

  1. You need to start by telling us the actual location of the campus, Keio has several.

  2. > from google maps, it’s about 500 yens

It depends what you mean with “center of Tokyo”. Shibuya or Shinjuku is often seen as the center, and you have the Toyoko line going directly to Shibuya for 220 yen in 20 minutes. Then you can take Yamanote line or basically any other line from there. Getting to Tokyo station also is a direct line, no need to switch lines, or at most 1 transfer for less than 400 yen, taking 30-40 minutes.

You also have Yokohama which is a very nice city (I live there, and love it). You would probably want to go around to various places within Tokyo anyways, so even if you lived in Tokyo, you’d have to travel around almost the same amount.

I feel like you overestimate what it costs to travel into Tokyo, and underestimate what it costs to travel within Tokyo. Living in the dorm and paying the transport fees to Tokyo would be way cheaper than renting and paying transport fees within Tokyo.
