MMoving to Japan

Question about double taxation (UK expats)

Hi,

I’m relocating to Japan this summer with my company. Effectively I would be working under a Japanese contract under a working visa.

I’m from the UK and understand there is a double tax treaty in place. I’m wondering if anyone from the UK has done this before and would greatly appreciate any insight into how tax worked for them.

  2. Granted I’m not in Japan yet! (Hopefully very soon as my visa appointment is this week) But I’m in the UK currently working remotely for my new company in Japan. They requested that I request a stamped form from HMRC called a Certificate of Residency. I submitted a request online and also posted a copy of the form to the address given on the HMRC website. I’m not sure which worked and it took WEEKS but eventually I received a stamped copy in the post. (my company we’re very adamant that it needed to be stamped)

    I’m still paying tax in the UK as I’m living here until I move, so can’t help with the next steps just yet. Hopefully that is half helpful though for now!
