Ahamo is part of docomo, the largest network in Japan. Esims are an option too
Previously I used Y Mobile which worked well on my Pixel phone (so I can free a SIM slot for home country phone number). Now the Ahamo also has support but I haven’t changed it to eSIM yet.
au povo 2.0 esim is free to sign up for, and if you do it between 9am-8pm or so, its issued instantly. You get voice and SMS (incoming), and slow ass unlimited data. If you just want a number for 2FA verification, this is a great choice. You do need to load some ‘topping’ once every 180 days to keep account active, cheapest one is like 1gb/day for 330 yen.

I’ve been using https://www.nihontsushin.com/ for a while and haven’t had any issues.
