My Japanese friend’s father died in Japan, but has bank accounts and real estate in the U.S. I imagine a death certificate is needed in the U.S., but does anyone here know of how to go about getting a death certificate or official translation of one that would be suitable for this situation?

Get the certificate take it to embassy get authorization.
You may need an “apostille”

If you’re in Japan you should be able to do it yourself.
There are also law offices etc that can do this for you if you’re not in Japan.
The following is just an example I grabbed off Google

Samurai Translators are very reliable. They will provide a certificate of translation too.
