Support/Advice: Difficulty finding a job with visa sponsorship after illness

Hi all,

I was ill for some time and so lost my contract at a great school. I didn’t recover till after hiring season was over, and now I’m having a hard time finding an employer that will sign for my visa extension. Eventually I do want to leave Japan but I’m not in a position to do so at the moment, so please skip that piece of advice.

I’ve had offers for interesting part-time work, but no one will deal with visa renewal. I’ve been applying to everything, but someone I know in hiring told me I might be overqualified due to the employers I’ve had, so potential ones might be afraid I’ll jump ship.

Every single interviewer so far has been highly skeptical as to why I’d leave such a good school and be between jobs, no matter what I tell them. The reasons are the same I’ve given back in the West without issue, so I wonder, what the heck kind of reason do I give Japanese employers? Any other advice?

Arigatou!

  1. How long were you at your old job? What kind of school was it? How long have you been in the country? Are you able to try for PR?

  2. One last resort I’ve seen some people do, is enroll in school (language school, or postgraduate studies), complete their course of study, and went back job hunting.

You’ll need to have the resources to pay your tuition and all living expenses for the duration of study, and be able to show evidence of it first however.

  3. The big eikawas take anyone and do visa sponsorship. If you feel like you’re getting rejected for being over qualified than just dumb down your resume.
