Is it difficult to find a part-time teaching job with N5?

Hello everyone,

I am here in Japan for my PhD study. Recently the inflation hit so hard. My MEXT scholarship has become volatile. I am constantly searching for a part time teaching job because I am a qualified teacher (my main major is Physics but I can teach English, or STEM). Is it difficult to find a part-time position without fluent Japanese?

  1. No, it’s not if you’re willing to teach for low wages at a conversation school.

  2. There are definitely part-time teaching jobs out there. However, most schools looking for non-Japanese teachers are probably looking for full-time English teachers. So if the position isn’t described as part-time in the job description, then chances are the school is probably looking for full-time employees.

  3. I’ve seen a few job posts from companies hiring STEM and math tutors. I don’t remember their names now, but dm later if you want to remind me and I’ll try to find their info.

Otherwise check out gaijinpot, jobsinjapan, and craigslist.

  4. Eikaiwa schools want full-time teachers whose native language is English, so that’s why you were rejected.

  5. You might need to check that you can do part time work especially as you are doctoral course level. Importantly you need permission from your supervisor. Many don’t allow part time work because it interferes with study time. You also need to apply for permission from immigration.

Are there any campus jobs such as TA or working in the campus shop. If not you could try something like conbini or McDonald’s. Easy jobs that like foreigners.

If you have any scholarship you might not be able to work part time anyway so check that first.

  6. You don’t Japanese need to work at a conbini. At least not at the Lawson by my house.
