Partially removing the 語末 in a verb?

Can someone explain to me how removing the 語末 (ます、て、た) or just a part of in the following sentence works and if you know any references or what the 文法 is called please inform me so that I can read up about it.

日本語を勉強し、N2を合格した。 ??

Usually the following

日本語を勉強してN2を合格した。
