I bought a processed meats basked through furusato nozei last year from a place that uses traditional German methods, and the beef jerky in it was hands down the best I’ve ever had in my life. Nothing else even comes close. The place is called ケルン and it’s located in 愛知県. Apparently their beef jerky won Gold in some international contest that took place in Germany.
Definitely not cheaper (it’s freaking expensive) but THE BEST beef jerky I’ve ever had in my life is from here.

German style butcher down near Machida. (They do online orders and ship)
The jerky flavor is amazingly juicy and smoky, and is almost like a thin steak compared with a typical jerky.
Worth the price every once in a while if you really want to treat yourself.
Make yer own it’s dead easy, get cheap aussie steaks
Tangu is expensive but tasty.
Looks like it’s time to plan a pilgrimage to 愛知県 for some beef jerky heaven.
Make your own. High quality lean meat, pre sliced, is easily available. Save some money.
I only eat Tengu. Love the hot pepper version. I used to eat this in the US too
Maybe not the best but I love 7-11 spicy beef jerky and not too expensive. It is my post run reward.
I like the Costco Kirkland Steak Strips
