Treadmill recommendations? Places to purchase?

I’m fortunate to live in a house in Tokyo that I can install a full size treadmill for rainy days or those hot humid times of late when running outside is less appealing. Budget ¥600,000 but it’s flexible.

Where would you buy a treadmill?

I’ve looked through past threads here and the main suggestions are Amazon or Rakuten but nearly all of those seem not great. Treadmills take a lot of wear and tear and break easily, especially the smaller folding ones that are flimsy. Is there a good treadmill shop that sells more durable ones and installs them? (They’re heavy!)

Suggestions other than gym membership welcome 😊 cheers!

  1. You could jog around your streets in the morning or at a nearby park. I would also argue that if you don’t already do that or have a regular gym membership that you consistently use, a treadmill might not be the best investment.

  2. I got one that was like 5 or 6man a while back. Generally highly-recommended on review sites. They weren’t kidding about the weight limit; it was 100kg and I was at like 105. The motor had trouble keeping up. Definitely be sure your motor is beefy enough. The bluetooth was also shit and the app really wonky (and only working on iPhone).

  3. Have you tried the curved ones?
bukiya dot net is a site that sells gym equipment, haven’t bought their treadmill but got some plates.
They also have an assault bike. The gym I go to has both and they both are tough.

  4. Hi OP. Similar situation to yourself. Haven’t bitten the bullet yet, but this shop looks like a good starting point:

The Harajuku branch sits under one of the Gold’s Gyms. I think it’s the one facing Omotesando that can be accessed from the metro station, but I’ve not managed to visit yet so I can’t be sure.

They also have an online store but, assuming those pictures aren’t fake/old, I would recommend visiting in-person to see the treadmills for yourself. My personal recommendation would be the Woodway Curve, which can be seen in one of the pictures (edit: it might be the Technogym equivalent, actually).

Another tip I can share having done a fair bit of Googling is that some manufacturers can be contacted directly via their Japanese websites and/or list Japanese vendors’ contact details (e.g. Technogym for the former). So it might be quicker to find a treadmill you like and then figure out how to get it by communicating with the manufacturer.

Finally, as a last resort, you might consider speaking to actual gyms to see whether they can introduce you to their vendor or explain how they imported them etc. etc. It’ll probably be hit and miss as they might worry you’re a competitor and/or simply not want to spend time helping out a stranger, but you never know.

That’s all I’ve been able to come up with thus far. Good luck and let us know how you get on!

  5. Just think of the humidity as a free sauna to go along with your run, work up a good sweat xD

  6. Yahoo Auction has a bunch of (what look to me like) gym surplus machines.

I have no idea if they are good or not, but they look the beefier kind.

The ラボートLXE1200(mc) which goes for about a million yen can be found for about ¥75,000.

    Worth checking out at least.
