Made my own salmon sashimi

I have no idea what I’m doing. I just bought salmon from Costco. Cut it into rectangles. Put it in the freezer for a few days. Thawed it out and cut into sushi looking pieces. It was actually really good. Cheaper than going out

  1. You only froze it for a few days? In the future I would recommend a a full week.

  2. Looks good.

If you want to up your game, sushi places will typically do a quick salt or sugar cure to remove some water content to give the salmon a firmer, more palatable texture.

  3. I bet it has been asked millions of times, but if you buy farm raised atlantic salmon from Norway from Sam’s club, and it doesn’t specifically say Frozen, do you have to freeze it before curing?

  4. If it’s not been flash frozen in an industrial grade freezer you’re running quite the food poisoning risk. Not sure if Costco salmon is previously frozen or not.

  5. Marinate it next time my boy or girl or other with soy sauce ponzu sauce some sesame oil in a dish TRUST ME before you cut it

  6. Be sure it’s sushi grade if eating raw but yeah looks quality. What brand is that?

  7. So just so everyone is clear. This was not solicited as “sushi grade”. This is farmed salmon from Norway. I froze it for a few days but no, technically temp was not low enough or long enough to be FDA safe. Medically i do not recommend doing this. If you are on a budget I won’t say not to do this. I am thankful for the comments showing videos how to properly slice the fish. Enjoy!

  8. does anyone know, is it best to pick farmed salmon with thick white banding?

  9. To answer several of the comments at once… Wild salmon is very prone to parasites due to the salmon eating fish with parasites. Farm raised is fed exclusively on pellets and is parasite free and therefore is considered safe even without freezing.

Granted, there is always a slight risk eating anything undercooked, but farm raised fish is considered safe to consume raw.
