I have an event coming up on the 14th where I need to dress semi-formally for the first time in a long time (I was thinking
full suit, but the people I’m going with are planning on jacket and pants)
As work has been coolbiz/casual since before covid, the suits I own are out of style, don’t fit, etc.
I had been planning to get a suit made when I lost a few kgs, but that’s been the case for over a year now, and instead the kgs have been going the other way. Maybe I should bite the bullet and do that, but the next time I anticipate wearing a suit after this would probably be March 2024.
Any ideas or advice? Rental? What about a formal Japanese thing?
Event is in Tokyo, I’m in Osaka probably until the 11tg

I always try to keep at least 1 formal outfit in my wardrobe at all times, since occasions where I need it often come up suddenly and I hate shopping on a deadline.
For me though, I have two suits. One in my normal size and one in my fat size. Both are off the rack so they’re not ~super nice~ suits, but they serve their purpose.
Muji french linen jacket is very versatile imo. Can match with white shirt without tie+chinos/dress pants and minimal-design shoes for semi-formal occasion. Keep every piece simple and nicely-fit.
Linen is also a good choice for hot weather (especially recently)
Just go to Aoyama or something. They have very cheap suits, and it never hurts to have one in your closet “just in case”
Can’t you wear smart dark pants and a dress shirt, and buy a cheap blazer? Minimal cost to tide you over this one event
2nd street – 3000 yen suit and dress pants set
What’s the target gender?
See if you can find jacket pants and shirt from uniqlo that fit. Cheapest option probably and probably you’ll use the pants and shirt again even for less dressed up occasions.
You could also try Zara
Check out Beams or United Arrows. Specifically United Arrows Gree Label Relaxing. They can be a pricey but you’ll definitely be able to find a stylish, hopefully well-fitting outfit perfectly acceptable for a formal event. Uniqlo also recently had a collaboration with a brand called Theory, they’ve got some blazers and slacks. Might be work checking out.
What’s your budget?
