What’s the industry like for an experienced graphics programmer?

I have 4 years of experience (will soon be five), with one year of that currently at a FAANG in silicon valley. Yet it’s a goal of mine to live and work in Tokyo for two years. Money isn’t an issue, I expect to take a majority cut from my current income. I have enough money saved up where I could literally quit today and not have to worry about working for 5 years even with San Francisco rent. Career-wise I have plenty of experience and “prestige” where I can always go back to the States and go back to making better money if I needed to.

Point is, I just want to work in Japan just to do it:

– Current FAANG dev, 4-5 years of experience

– Bachelor’s degree from a top 20 school, but no graduate degree

– My specific stack is in computer graphics as my primary focus (Vulkan, OpenGL), with decent amount of android experience in my periphery along with a few web fullstack work here and there.

– N2 Japanese, working on getting to N1 (not good but better than nothing).

– Company without OT, just want to get my work done and kick my feet up

However from my research on Indeed, linkedin, etc most, if not all computer graphics related positions (mid-senior level) are in game companies. Exceptions being Sony, Live2D, and a few random startups here and there. I don’t necessarily want to do a lateral move into being an android dev, but if need be I will.

Question(s):

1. How’s the graphics dev industry in Japan? Any big names I’m just not seeing?

2. Am I just better off looking for android dev work to cast a wider net?

3. Salary isn’t an issue as long as I can pay the rent without digging into my savings, but how high should I realistically aim for with my resume?
