1. The history with NK is *extremely* important to the far right in Japan, so even if NK publicly apologized, returned all the abductees to Japan (irrespective of their personal wishes), and paid huge sums of money, they’d still host regular political events to keep the anger alive.

   That’s not to say it wasn’t an utterly horrible thing for NK to do, and they definitely need to take full responsibility, make full reparations, and be completely open about the history and details.

   But the abductions are to the Japanese right wing what Hillary’s emails or Biden’s kid’s computer or Bill C’s blowjob were to the Republicans were at one point. And what abortion and gay marriage and climate change are to them now. In other words, those abductions have become a powerful political tool that they won’t stop wielding until long after it’s no longer useful.
