Road trip as a single female

I’m thinking of adding a bit of camperization to my little Kei van and hitting the road for long weekends and holidays. Has anyone done this as a single female? I’ve done it with a partner and family, and never had any issues, but in daily life, over the years, I’ve had to deal with my fair share of chikans and stalkers.

I stand out, it will be hard to be stealth. I feel pretty okay staying in highway rest stops and Michi no Eki, but quite nervous about other places. I’ve done a lot of solo traveling, but always in hotels or guesthouses.
Any stories, close calls, advice?

  1. I’ve done lots of solo camping and also hitchhiking. Never had any problems. If anything people were more friendly and checked on me.

I’ve only ever had issues with guys in cities, usually on public transportation.

  2. My wife’s friend has been solo camping for about 5 years. At first she was quite nervous spending the night out alone, but now she says she feels safer out alone than in the city.

  3. I’ve never had any trouble, especially since you can lock a campervan you’re sleeping in, as opposed to a tent. My only advice is to grab some emergency pee toilet bags so you don’t have to exit the van in the night, when some guy groups at campsites can become a bit raucous and get a little over-exuberant inviting you to join them, fueled by liquid courage.
    Have fun!
