Materbity clinics in Tokyo?

So a few weeks ago we got the news — we’re gonna be parents! 😃

My wife and I are over the moon, and now we’re thinking about which clinic we should choose to follow her pregnancy and to go into labor. I would like to be with my wife during labor, which is not a given currently for all clinics, so that’s important for both of us. Another factor is the environment, the meals they would provide, and above all, anesthesia during labor, which is something we are not willing to compromise on.

If anyone has any suggestions, or if you can even share your own experience, we would both be very grateful! Thank you in advance!

  1. I delivered at Seibo Hospital. They allow partners for delivery and visits during the day, although not full time. Tbh I enjoyed the solo time because I rested sooooooo much more than many of my other mom friends.

Also they have 24/7 epidural. Fun fact: just because they administer it doesn’t mean it’ll work.

  2. [Seijo Kinoshita Hospital at Seijo Gakuen](https://kinohosp.com/en/) on the Odakyu Line is where we had our kid earlier this year. They had a lot of English speaking staff, midwives, nurses and doctors to get us through the process. The guy who owns this hospital is also the head of some OBGYN committee of Japan, so we felt well-looked after. They are also happy to do an epidural which was a must for my wife too.

  3. In the Feb 8 episode of the “Tokyo Living” podcast (on Spotify iTunes etc) the host interviews a local doula about several birthing clinic options in the Tokyo area. I found it very helpful.

  4. I’m wondering why I hear a lot from people that they don’t allow partners into the delivery room? Is this common in Japan?

  5. Where do you live? Can’t be too far from home, considering 3ababa-kun could decide to appear in the middle of the night. We used Ikuryo Clinic In Nakameguro. Been a while but it was super clean, genki, English speaking main doctor and some staff and as it is a maternity clinic and not a hospital, no sick patients around. Pre-Covid they were completely cool with me being in the room and I even stayed over night, 2nd time I did it with my older son! Good times.
