Since it seems like I will be moving to Japan this year for work, I’m curious to know if anyone has any recommendations for translation machines/apps?
I will be working in game developement and thus be working closely to other team members. My Japanese level is currently a bit lower than the recommended business level. It was enough to pass the interviews but I’m currently studying hard to improve it.
The use for the translation tool I’m imagining would mostly be in ”emergencies”, so it’s not to replace actual Japanese speech on my end.
Has anyone had any experiences with any of the commercial translator machines? I’d love to hear your experiences!

DeepL, but your team will almost certainly recommend something.
Be aware that many game development companies prohibit the uploading of sensitive information to services in the cloud.
Chat text containing business content are of course confidential.
You may have to use offline translation software.
DeepL as noted elsewhere but 1) you shouldn’t use it really, since it will be a crutch and will stop you from advancing the way you should, 2) DeepL is amazing in many ways but has a bad habit of literally skipping entire sentences etc which can make things end up with seeming literally the opposite meaning of what they actually are, so you still need to verify. As a first pass for translation and things to deal with the easy stuff it’s great but if you rely on it for critical stuff it will bite you in the ass someday.
