(Itinerary Check) Second time to Japan: Tokyo – Kyushu – Nara – Tokyo

Hi all,

This is our second time to Japan (we’ve done Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Kanazawa before) and this time we’d like to head far to the west to Kyushu and see some of the sights and nature around there, but would be curious about whether people think we are using our time well.

Some questions to answer:

1. Is Beppu a good base for exploring areas around Oita? What would be practical in terms of day trips from there? Is it worth going to the Showa Town and Matama Coast?
2. Is it worth going to Kusatsu if we are already spending a lot of time in Beppu?
3. Are we missing out on a lot of stuff in Kyushu and is there are practical way to fit more in without changing hotels too much?

To consider:

1. My partner doesn’t like moving every day somewhere, so I’m trying to plan around hubs where we can do day trips.

  1. Tokyo to Hakata by train seems like a waste of a precious day. I understand you’ll have the rail pass, but a 1 way flight from Tokyo to Fukuoka strikes me as an improvement upon this plan. Especially since as I understand the JR Pass, you’re not allowed to use the fastest Nozomi service, though others can chime in on that aspect since I’ve never actually gotten a JR Pass.
