PR card expiration

My permanent residency card will expire next year.
If I were to lose it and have to go to immigration to get a new one, would the expiration of the card be the same as the current one or would they give me a new one that’s valid for another 7 years?

  1. Most likely the first one. Same as current.

    >!Because to me the second one sounds like this: instead of going through the hassle of renewing the card I can just toss the card in a lake, report it as missing to the koban and voila free extension!!<

  2. I’ve always wondered what the consequences are of being caught with an expired PR card.

Would the police just tell you to renew the card asap?

  3. Cos I’m an idiot I’d let my card expire when I went in in 2020, only by 2 days but still. They renewed it without comment and right at the end the woman asked, very politely, if I wouldn’t mind coming in before it expires next time. I think I got the COVID benefit of the doubt that day so don’t plan on making the same mistake twice.

Edit- Sorry I didn’t really answer the OP’s question. The expiry date of my new card is 7 years from the day I went in, not the day the other one expired.
