Hi everyone,
This is my first post here so please forgive me if I made any mistakes/broke any rules.
So my wife apparently got in a collision accident with someone else’s car while she was walking with her bike and I wanted to ask everyone how we should proceed with this.
To give more context, she was walking in a parking lot of a shopping mall with her bike (was not riding), and apparently there was a lot of congestion. The issue happened when she tried to walk around one of the cars, but the bike pedal apparently scratched the rear bumper of a car.
They called the police to mediate the issue, and after the police confirmed the situation, they were left to deal the issue with themselves. I fully understand that my wife is the one liable and that we will most likely need to pay for the repair (which I have no issue with).
My only concern is, I am not sure how I am supposed to proceed with this.
Usually, we would leave this issue to an insurance company, but since we are not in any kind of insurance to cover for this specific case, we will most likely be dealing with it ourselves (I don’t know much about cars/car insurance). I tried doing some research and from the looks of it, we would either be…
* talking with their insurance company to handle this issue (most optimal)
* dealing with the issue within the involved parties (would like to avoid if possible)
What I’m most scared of is if we go the route of the second option and are forced to deal with the issue ourselves, I am worried that they may charge us an unreasonable amount.
Has anyone had a similar issue in the past, and if so how did you get through it all?
If you need any additional information, I will do my best to answer them.
Thank you in advance, and I hope you have a good rest of the week 🙂

Do you not have bicycle insurance? Car insurance should cover it if you have a car. If you don’t have either of those insurances (you really should have bicycle insurance ) then you need to pay out of pocket to fix the damage. Just a scratch shouldn’t be any more than ¥100k or so. But if they want it fixed from a dealer, probably more.
You are required by law to have bike insurance. A lot of bills, including phone and electricity bills, have the add-on bicycle insurance option. Are you sure you don’t already have insurance?
You’ll probably just get a bill through the post for the amount from their insurance.
I wish she scratched my car so we could all get on with our days and not worry about it.
