Update on regarding my last post about “half of the staff leaving company in next month..”

This was my earlier [post](https://www.reddit.com/r/japanlife/comments/14cl858/half_of_the_staff_of_my_department_quitting_at/).

As per comments, most of you suggests me not to leave as long as new job is not secured and all.

Now here is the update:

My old boss of current company, who also left a years ago, due to conflict with the boss, texted me that I can join his company, if I am looking for new job. He came to know about our company\`s staff leaving from one of his close staff from current company who is also leaving next month.

From 7/31, I will be alone with new designer who just joined last month , and looks like all the projects will be handle to me(out of skill projects too), but this is not sure too.

My old boss have guaranteed me to offer a job in his place , if I leave this place myself. Because he dont want to make it look like he asked me to leave this job which also makes sense.

I asked my old boss, that if job is gurantee in his company, then I will talk with my current HR or boss and will express my desire of leaving company as many old staff are leaving within a month. He said he will 100% offer the job in his place. We have been working for 4 years and he was the one who took my interview in this company and hired me. I was working under him too. So I have a trust on him.He was technically a director of the company.

Now comes to my current work part.

If I leave, there will be no one in developing team, so chances are they wont let me leave easily as long as they replace me. Now I am bit confused on what approach should I take, and how should I take it?

Should I talk with HR and express my feeling over leaving due to less staff ? or should I hand resignation letter directly? or should I ask them to raise my pay. Until now, I dont have any problem with the current job, + I have been working remotely from last 2-3 years and requires only few times to go to office to attend meeting.

As mention on old post, our baby delivery schedule is on late September, so child care leave comes to take place. I have also informed my new boss about it, and he told, I can take a week or month off needed or work remotely if required. Our in laws are also coming to Japan during baby delivery time and will be staying for atleast 3 months. He have already accepted my desire pay too (verbally or line text)

Can anyone suggests me or guide me to proper path? Been stressing about it a lot since last months.

Sorry for long post.

  1. > so chances are they wont let me leave easily

You’re legally entitled to leave when you want to with a two week’s notice.

Once you have your new job offer in writing, turn in your two week’s notice and you’re done.

  2. If you’re confident you want to leave:

You do ***absolutely nothing*** until you have a signed offer-letter from new company. You say ***exactly zero*** words to current company until then.

Once you have a signed offer letter from New Co, you give Old Co your 2-4 weeks notice, depending on how nice you want to be to Old Co.

If you want to wait until after you finish parental leave from Old Co, delay the plan until after parental leave. It’s probably better to take leave from Old Co than New Co.

If you want to stay at Old Co, cool, stay at Old Co. You can assess that after parental leave.

It seems like you’re in a fine position. Don’t stress too much.

  3. You say you have no problems with your current job, aside from being afraid of getting too many tasks.

As you are their only developer left, you are in a power position now.

You can request a much higher salary and no unreasonable amount of tasks.
If they don’t want to offer you this, sign a contract with that other company and hand in your resignation.

Although be sure that other company for sure is willing to hire you.

  4. Sign the new contract first and then quit your current job.
It’s just that plain simple! Anything else is NOT your problem.

  5. Sign the contract with new company first, don’t resign until you get it.

And no one can stop you from resigning, and you don’ need to give them any reason, just follow company rule and/or law to give them the strictly required information and time for the resignation, period.

  6. Instead, can’t you ask for a raise and promotion? Take advantage of the situation; it’s an opportunity in disguise

  7. Lol you sure the two aren’t in cahoots trying to get you to quit so they don’t need to pay the stuff required if they fire you?

I’d be extremely wary of this.

  8. Send an email and resume to your ex-boss’s new company email address, asking if any positions are available. It’s a cold call, and quite likely they’ll say there is not a position available, but you never know! 😉

If not obvious, I am suggesting you create a paper-trail that makes clear *you* contacted the new company first, absolving them of any suggestion of being the one to make the first move. Given you and your wife are on the clock, I’d make the move asap.

As an added bonus, you will also get the confirmation of the job offer in a formal email that will put you in a stronger position if you’re worried about them messing with you.

  9. You are not entitled to parental leave next September if you change jobs now.

You need to have worked in a same company for over a year in order to be eligible for parental leave
