Question on Income Based Student Loan repayment plans when married

Hey All,

Like many Americans in Japan, I’m trying to switch over my federal student loans to an income based repayment plan, but there’s a few questions regarding marital status. While I wasn’t married for the 2022 tax year, which I’m assuming my income would be based on, I am now, to a Japanese citizen (Nonresident alien).

However, when filling in your marital status and proceeding to filing separately (which is our intention going forward in my case), it notifies you that your spouse will have to “cosign” your application. I was just wondering for those with experience in a similar situation, how does this work if your spouse isn’t even a resident nor has a SSN?

Thanks.

  1. If your spouse does not have a Ssn then they can’t co-sign it’s that simple. As far as my loan servicer is concerned my wife doesn’t exist, that way it keeps them from going after her.

  2. I file my taxes as “single.” So, the IRS/my loan providers don’t even know my wife exists. Much easier that way.
