Hi! I’m pretty sure this was a scam and just want to see if it happened to anyone else here and maybe just warn other people in the process.
We received a package from Amazon this morning through Yamato but didn’t order anything so this was weird enough, but then got asked to pay directly since it wasn’t paid by credit card on the site.
We always pay with cards when ordering since paying by cash when receiving the package usually costs additional fee.
Yamato guy said it sometimes happen and if we didn’t order anything he’ll take the package back without us needing to pay for it but he didn’t mention that this could be a scam.
The name and address were correct and the expected fees were about 5000 yens.
Did this happen to anyone else?
EDIT: most comments confirmed this was a scam, thanks for letting me know and I’m glad I didn’t fall for it. Be careful if you receive unexpected packages (cash on delivery) everyone!

Ya it’s a pretty common scam called 代引き詐欺
They can tell you the sender and give the sender’s phone number sometimes for you to call and confirm.
I had this once and it was something I ordered but didn’t expect to be arriving so soon.
I’m sorry to hear about your experience.
代金引換郵便詐欺(だいきんひきかえゆうびんさぎ), shortened as 代引き詐欺, ”cash-on-delivery” is one type of scam in Japan. It has been used for decades, and it used to be more popular during the Heisei era.
Usually, an employee will wear Yamato, Sagawa etc uniforms, and use dirty techniques to deceive someone.
If you have paid by credit card by using Amazon, Mercari, Rakuten etc, that means that you paid by card and end of question. If some random dude wears a Yamato, Sagawa or any other uniforms from the delivery companies, just politely ignore them, and never get cheated by this type of scam again.
Just happened to me too, I wonder if it is gonna be more common for whatever reason in the coming days..?
Edited to add: It seems there are various forms of this scam and recently the delivery people are legitimate but the package delivery is the scammy part. Obviously, do not pay cash-on-delivery if you did not order the package.
We got a case of Monster energy drinks that we didn’t order, which was out of character because none of us drink that shit. When it was COD I instantly was on guard. Delivery dude just nodded and said there have been a lot of these scams recently, and it was probably a scam.
this has been a thing even when I was a kid and probably much longer, and it’s not just exclusive to Japan. it’s also possible someone put the wrong address somehow, but if you definitely didn’t order it then I’d not even waste any brain power on it.
That actually happened to me yesterday too! It was over 18,000 yen but they tried to deliver it to my old address…
I called Amazon and they told me the order was placed by an unrelated account and they immediately blocked it for me and even checked to make sure my payment info was safe.
I then called Yamato to say I refuse the delivery.
So weird to hear it wasn’t only me…
This one is always confusing to me, what is the actual goal here?
Mystery shopper sends something to you and there’s a possibility you unwittingly accept/pay for it.
No money changes hands to the mystery shopper since the transaction is billed by Amazon via Yamato.
What does the mystery shopper get out of this? They can’t refund the item to their Amazon account without returning it and they don’t get the item. They can’t claim it wasn’t delivered and ask for a new one to a different address because that would be a red flag.
Seems like more of a nuisance than anything?
That said if you do pay for it you’re out the money, but I’d assume you can sort that out with Amazon directly.
Yes yes yes this is a scam. The same thing happened to me and I was very confused also at first, they were trying to charge me 20,000. My friends told me it was a scam and so I refused the package, so yeah now you know!
it can happen without ill intent. if your credit card expiry date rolls around AZ asks you to re-input your cc full number and yuuko 有効 ゆうこう kikan date . without the new info AZ will regard the card invalid until input .
even if you have messages set for eigo the card warning message arrives in nihongo so check that you havent overlooked a mail from AZ.
NEVER accept any package that you’re not expecting.
Common scam.
You end up paying for a bunch of trash.
Worst part is there is nobody you can complain to or get your money back from since it wasn’t a legitimate purchase.
