Buying shirts as a taller person

Just wondering if any of you have found a good store (in store, online, in Japan or out…) to find longer shirts. Generally, the biggest sizes go horizontally rather than vertically : )

H&M has been an okay option where I live (Kyoto) though their selection seems to have declined recently.

Curious if anyone here longer in the torso area has found a good option : )

  1. Shimamura and Workman and other “super budget” places can have some decent lengths. Uniqlo hasn’t been bad for me, but I tend to have to run a size larger than I’m used to. For long sleeve dress shirts, it’s mostly down to custom or tailoring larger sizes.

Costco is a life saver if you can swing it as they just carry American sizes.

  2. I have no answers but I just want to say I feel your pain.

This whole “box silhouette” trend is keeping my wardrobe so small.

  3. I buy from 2tall, a company in the UK or ASOS which as a long range you can filter by. Sadly found now local options in Japan. I am 197.4cm. 😭

  4. Not in my experience shopping regular places. There are extremely few if any T sizes I have found in 16 years of residence. For me, I buy all my polos that I intend to tuck in well outside of Japan, and for proper shirts, Yuzawaya and now [I use my insurance provider for pattern-fit shirts.](https://www.saitama-kyosai.or.jp/shinshihuku/shirt/) Previous to Corona, it was easy enough to get fully kitted-out in Thailand for a year or so and be fine.

  5. Zara shirts tend to be quite a good fit for me.

I can’t wear long sleeve Uniqlo shirts as the sleeves are always too short :/

  6. GU has a really big oversized and loose collection at the moment. I am 189cm and their shirts and tees fit me perfectly and some are even too big.

  7. The length is a challenge for the… Horizontally expanding people, too. I typically wear undershirts, but I’ve a had a lot of trouble finding ones long enough to go around the belly flab.

  8. try searching for sakazen, big size clothing chain store. They have sumo size available

  9. Not sure how tall you are, but the Muji button-ups when not tucked in are decently long (I’m 5’11-6′ tall) but not long enough to look ridiculous at least at my height.

  10. What kind of shirts are you looking for?

Most Japanese “big size shops” are for people who are short & wide as you’ve found, rather than big & tall as you might find in countries with more tall people. [Grand Back](https://online.taka-q.jp/shop/brand/grandback) is one exception that actually has clothes for tall folks, but often pretty pricey. Their end of season/end of line sales can be more reasonable.

When I used to have to wear business shirts every day, I got them order made, and it’s not as expensive as you might think. I used to go to [Dankan](https://dankan.co.jp/items/shirt/) for suits and shirts, and shirts (linked) are 12100 for two. You can choose the collar type, pocket style (or no pocket), cuff style, etc. They make them to measure so you no longer have a situation where the shirt is too big around your belly and not quite long enough in the arms… If you wear a watch you can get your watch arm cuff made a bit bigger to give you space. It’s really nice, and for not that much more than you might pay to buy a shirt that kinda-sorta-maybe fits from a regular shop. Short sleeve or long sleeve, of course. If I ever needed to get shirts made again I would absolutely go back and order more. The only downside is that you have to wait for them to be made. Generally 2-3 weeks. Sometimes longer if you order when all the college kids are getting their “recruit suits” suits made.

  11. I’m tall and slim with long limbs and Zara is a good option. I don’t really want to shop fast fashion tho and I wish I had more choices.

  12. I find Uniqlo UT t-shirts are too bad.

LLbean Japan has US tall sizes you can order online which are longer in torso and arms without being wide.
For work shirts you can just go to a semi-order shop or purchase online through a company like [tailorstore.com](https://tailorstore.com) since it will probably be impossible to get neck, shoulder, and arm proportions right off a rack here.

  13. Shimamura has some long stuff. It’s the only place I buy shirts now. There’s always a larger person section with up to 5XL, and they mostly get longer as opposed to wider. I go for 4XL, and they fit great. When I raise my arms up, my belly doesn’t pop out haha

  14. I went to Isetan recently and the shopkeepers were very helpful but ultimately literally the only good fit I could get was a Hugo boss shirt. It was very nice but also very pricey
