Hiroyuki Sanada impossible to understand in Ringu

I’m watching Ringu 1998 on YouTube and I can understand some parts of what everyone says in this movie. Everyone except Hiroyuki. He plays the ex husband called Ryuji and he is the guy that beat the shit out of tom cruise in the last samurai. The wife in particular is the complete opposite where she talks slowly and clearly. This guy sounds like he’s speaking a different language.

Anyone else have an experience like this where two Japanese people sound like they are speaking two different languages? Is this just a normal thing for middle aged and old Japanese men?

  1. Without any context as to your general skill level, I’m gonna speculate it’s because you’re not used to rough masculine speech. Am I in the right ballpark?

  2. As another commenter mentioned, the character is speaking in a hyper masculine sorta speech. Japanese can be incredibly gendered in it’s usage and, for the most part, when studying jt you learn a very general (and specific to Tokyo) version of the language. If any gendered speech enters at all, it seems to be almost invariably some of the feminine sentence endings. The style of speech he is using in this role is very “gruff” and would be considered FAR too rude to ever teach to a foreigner, so you end up having to just, sorta, piece it together as you continue learning.
