Itinerary Check – First Timers to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka + 2 Day Trips

Hi everyone! My husband and I (both 28) will be heading to Japan for the first time from Canada in September!

He’s really big into Gundam whereas we are both foodies and into history/culture and Disney (a dream of ours is to visit every Disney park). We wanted to get some feedback on our rough plans.

**Day 1: Arrival in Tokyo**
– Arrive at Haneda at 1:45PM
– Check into hotel in Shinjuku
– POSSIBLY attend Tokyo Yakult Swallows game at 6PM (provided we are feeling alright with jet lag)

**Day 2: Tokyo**
– Meiji Jingu
– Yoyogi Park
– Explore Harajuku/Shinjuku neighbourhoods

**Day 3: Yokohama Day Trip**
– Take train from Shinjuku
– Gundam Factory/Gundam Base
– Red Brick Warehouse
– Cup of Noodles Factory (maybe)
– Chinatown
– If we don’t see the Yakult Swallows game on Day 1, see the Bay Stars play at Yokohama Stadium at 6PM

**Day 4: Tokyo**
– Currently a free day (researching more attractions like the fish market which is closed the next day- please provide any you’d recommend)

**Day 5: Tokyo**
– Senso-ji
– Ueno Park
– Akibara

**Day 6: Tokyo to Kyoto**
– Take shinkansen to Kyoto
– Check into hotel by Kyoto Station
– Higashiyama Jisho-ji
– Philosopher’s Path

**Day 7: Kyoto**
– Fushimi Inari Shrine (first thing in the morning)
– NORU Hidden Kyoto Bike Tour

**Day 8: Kyoto**
– Arashiyama Bamboo Grove
– Pontocho
– Goin

**Day 9: Kyoto to Nara to Osaka**
– Check out of hotel
– Day trip to Nara
– Go to Osaka and check into hotel TBD (possibly Namba)

**Day 10: Osaka**
– Osaka Castle
– Kuromon Ichiba Market
– Dontobori

**Day 11: Osaka**
– Namba Yasaka Jinja
– Shopping at Namba Parks
– Dendentown
– Osaka Tower

**Day 12: Osaka to Tokyo Disney**
– Take shinkansen to Tokyo
– Check into hotel near Tokyo Disney (our booking window for Disney hotels open tomorrow but we have a backup booked in Tokyo Bay)
– Weeknight evening pass to DisneySea

**Day 13: Tokyo Disneyland**
– A full day at Tokyo Disneyland

**Day 14: Tokyo DisneySea**
– A full day at DisneySea

**Day 15: Departure from Tokyo**
– TeamLabs at 9:00 AM
– Gundam Base Tokyo
– Flight leaves Haneda at 4:20PM

Questions:
– What are the likelihood of buying baseball tickets day of at the stadium nearing the end of the season? Is there anything we need to worry about?
– Should we ship our luggage from Kyoto to Osaka or should we bring it to us in Nara/store it at the station? We will both have carry-ons.
– Do you have any recommendations for food tours and/or cooking classes?
– We were back and forth about squeezing in a Hakone overnight stay but I think our intinerary is full as it is.. What do you think?

Thanks in advance!

  1. sorry for cherry-picking this bit but:

    > Day 9: Kyoto to Nara to Osaka – Check out of hotel – Day trip to Nara – Go to Osaka and check into hotel TBD (possibly Namba)

That sounds super stressful to me. Where are you going to leave your luggage while in Nara?

We’ve been there last month and we were honestly really happily busy with Nara (mainly Nara park, didn’t look at much outside of it) for a full day without checkout in the morning and check-in in the evening.

  2. If your carryons fit in the small size lockers (some do, some don’t) then it’s probably safe to rely on stashing them in train station lockers in Nara. But if it doesn’t then you are relying on finding 2 open medium lockers or a large locker, which can be lot harder to come by at a busy station. In that case it might be a better idea to forward your luggage

  3. I just booked TDR hotels last night when the bookings opened up local time at 11am.

Have multiple devices pointed at the website and when 11am hits refresh, refresh, refresh. MiraCosta park view went almost immediately. Toy Story went faster (and then some more reappeared). We were successful on our computer and not our phones.

When we were finally able to select a room it wasn’t the one we wanted, but better that then not getting a room at all.

I’d also set a ‘what we want to pay, what we can pay and the absolute max we should pay’ as you may get the hotel and room type, but not the floor.

You also need a Disney account if you already have one from visiting the other parks you are good to go.

  4. Congrats on scoring a TDR hotel! Refreshing frenzy pays off. Just like Disney, it’s all about the magic! ✨
