Leaving and Re-entering Japan.

I’m currently on a working visa and I plan to go back to my home country for a couple of weeks to visit a dying relative. I’ve never left the country on a visa and was just wondering if I need any documents aside from covid vaccine plus booster docs. Sorry for the stupid question.

  1. Get your vaccine passport and familiarize yourself with the MOFA form. State your intention to reenter at the airport before you leave and fill out the forms there. Finally, go to the Return to Japan Facebook group for more info. Good luck!

  2. You’ll need the MySOS app when you return to Japan. You have to download it from a healthcare provider website and not from the App Store. You don’t need to show anything at the airport unless your destination country requires anything.

When returning to Japan, you need to get a PCR test within 72 hours before your departure and a negative certificate. You will show that certificate during check-in plus a QR code. I didn’t have a QR code so they told me to go to a website and complete a very short questionnaire confirming that I didn’t experience any symptoms, get in close contact with a sick person, etc. After that, I received a QR code and finished my check-in.

Upon arriving in Japan, you will need to show both MySOS and the QR code, and the airport staff will determine if you can pass, need to take a swab test, or get quarantined. Make sure to check the MOFA website for more details.
