Bringing a Drone to Japan

Hi there, I am heading to Japan soon for the first time and have recently got a drone that I’d love to be able to bring. From my understanding, the drone just needs to be registered and you are free to bring it in as long as you abide by their rules.

I have applied for a registration and it bounced back saying (using a Google translated version of the email I was sent), I don’t have an address, but I don’t have space to enter one to begin with.

If anyone has had to do this before, or knows anything about the process, please let me know. Thanks 🙂

  1. It’s really difficult for a local to use one … a foreigner would have next to next chance

  2. leave it at home and experience your trip with your own eyes, in the moment. you’re going to have a great time, i promise you aren’t going to even want to be dealing with a drone.

  3. Lots of touristy places have “no drone” signs. Two I remember are Himeji castle and the Mozu tombs in Osaka. I feel like I saw more but can’t recall where now.

  4. I don’t recommend it, my partner brought his when he moved here and a lottt of the country is a no drone zone so it’s been sitting in the closet the entire time.

  5. Anywhere of interest has drones banned and I wouldn’t want to get involved with the Japanese police. As an avid hiker, I fucking hate drones anyway. Only thing worse is having to hear somebody’s boombox over drone whirring.

  6. I have four drones and left them at home in NJ. Don’t even know when I’d find the time to use it. But I did wanna take a second to let you know that it’s probably not worth it. Go to an observation deck.
