3. All phones sold by Japanese carriers are now unlocked. You should be able to go to a Docomo shop or an AU shop and buy one. You may have to sign a cheap month-to-month contract to do it but you shouldn’t have any problems cancelling that contract after a month or two. The extra few thousand yen for this shouldn’t be a big concern considering the cost of the phone.

   You should check to see if there are differences between the Docomo and AU models as the networks use different frequencies, or if you’re on an MVNP on Docomo, just get the Docomo model.

   Alternatively you can find new in box phones for sale on Yahoo Auctions but you won’t get a warranty.
