  1. I’m still wondering what is actually a proper way to consume supplements in the form of pill/tablets where they always suggest more than 1 pc for daily dosage (e.g 1日目安4粒). Do you drink them all in one time? Do you distribute the amount properly in a day like 1 pill per 4 hours or 2 in the morning and another 2 at night?

At some point I heard that consuming small amounts of vitamins gradually is better for livers burden rather than in a single go, but imo its troublesome and hard to rmb or to schedule in a day.

  2. Trying to determine the legality of having someone mail me a jar of fruit preserves from the US. Being from California, I’m craving some Knott’s boysenberry preserves for my morning toast, but I can’t get a straight answer into whether I need some sort of certificate to have a friend mail me a jar from the US. Anyone have some insight?

  3. After being laid off, I know I can start getting money from HelloWork after 7 days of the last day of employment. I’m wondering if it’s better to start a new job on the 8th day or later. I believe that once you start getting money from HelloWork and successfully find a job afterwards, they pay you a small percent of the remaining amount of money as congratulation money (basically an incentive since they want people to find new work). Can anyone confirm if this understanding is correct? Or can I still get the money if there is no gap in employment (new job starting the 1st day)?

  4. Wife and I are shopping for a new sofa that is not comfortable, not leather, not incredibly expensive, and not fugly.

Nitori and Ikea basically only had nice leather sofas (or so I remember). I haven’t been to Otsuka recently but I’m not sure about their quality now (although they have gotten easier to shop at). I’ve never been to Takumi Otsuka but have been considering it, especially if they don’t have the being escorted by a salesperson thing. Costco was nice but leather and delivery were blockers.

Am wondering if there are any other places worth considering (Tokyo, can easily go to Chiba and Saitama as well).

  5. Looking for a cheap (2014-2018 500k-800k tops) small runabout with the very occasional 100km highway run (once a month).

I’ve tried a Honda fit, Nissan note and Mazda demio.

I found the fit even in a 1.3 to have enough power. Whereas the 1.3 demio felt like I needed to get out and push at any kind of incline.

I have a 3 year old and would like to occasionally go camping as a family and perhaps visit the local ski hills (not real mountains) in Kansai. Potentially I might add a roof rack.

Is the fit up to the task for a small family on a budget or should I be looking at something else?(Don’t like the Toyota aqua).

2014/2015 fit hybrid low miles is pretty much ¥600k w shaken etc.

I’m tempted by the MPG of the hybrid.

Mazda 3 maybe is worth a look in, but I’m inclined to avoid diesel as I assume the DPF won’t get properly cleared out.

Likely to do 500km a month.

  6. Is there any way to get the 2万円 for the my number card if I applied after February? Internet says no but maybe there are some ways. I am so pissed I didn’t apply earlier and the money would come in handy.

  7. Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations on how to wire money (in yen) to an overseas account?

Basically I need to pay for a service overseas and I need to wire like 130,000 yen (once before order and again after I receive the product) and as far as I’ve read, Japanese banks charge a lot for international money transfer? I’ve never sent money overseas before so kind of worries.

  8. Does anyone have recommendations for products to remove oil stains from clothes? I’ve been eating ramen a lot more since living in Japan and noticing more small stains from the oily soup that are very difficult to wash out. I’ve learned my lesson and have started to request the little paper aprons whenever they have them but wondering if there is anything I could do to get these prior stains out?

  9. I saw a diseased hakubishin(?) outside my building Sunday night. It didn’t occur to me until later that maybe I should report it to the hokenjo or something. Is it too late, or should I do it?

(It was so mangy and scabby I wasn’t entirely sure what it was, and it was behaving oddly — they usually avoid people, it hissed and kind of ran at us before we stomped and scared it away. Maybe the behavior was because we surprised it, or because of our dog. I know it’s almost impossible for it to be rabid but it made me uneasy.)

  10. Question about a side business from home involving cooking.

I want to start a small side business selling food (cakes, cookies, etc). Is it possible to do it from my rented apartment kitchen? If so, what is the process or regulation (license, etc).

    Have PR.

  11. What is a baito job that requires almost no Japanese and is simple or repetitive?

My Japanese is just N5, I live in Tokyo (Meguro). I can work in the evening.

Last time I checked on Townwork and applied for houru in an izakaya. However my Japanese is too bad, I’m working in the kitchen now.

Haven’t worked anything before with absolutely no skills, I’m baffled by the tasks in the kitchen. It’s been a month since the day I started working but I can only remember a few basic disks.

I find myself studying the menu at home and it reduces my time for learning Japanese, however, I still suck at both.

I get scolded for that, which is reasonable. I try my best too, it’s difficult though.

It’s a piece of cake for many but I’m so stressed at work. I don’t plan to leave, only until they kick me out. I’m not expecting that but I cry over it. I don’t know what else to do.

Please let me know some options I can choose. Thank you.

  12. I’ve had a rakuten card for years now. It’s my only Japanese visa credit card. I have another under master card that I use for almost everything. They recently sent me a new card. I’ve literally never used the old one.

I’ve been considering cancelling the card. Are there any benefits or reasons to keep it open? On the other hand, are there any risks tied to keeping it open if I never use it? Not sure what the best course of action is.

  13. My ward sent me a packet to get a free dental check-up (+cleaning?) The dentist I usually use is outside of this ward, so I don’t think covered under the offer. Along with the packet there’s a long list of dental offices to choose from. Any suggestions for filtering the list down or finding a dentist worth a damn in my ward? Is there any Japanese site that does reviews of dentists and clinics or something?

  14. looking for an outside place with a bbq grill for a weekend evening around Tokyo. browsed the Tokyo Parks website and it looks like grill rental/use time ends around 4-5pm, and we’d like to be later. does anyone have a spot to recommend?

  15. Can I turn off Line vibration when I receive a message but keep the banner notifications on? I read that the only way to do this is by turning off vibration on iphone but that sounds dumb as hell

  16. Is there a place you can buy thicker toilet paper? I really miss the 4times folded from Germany 😀

  17. The fasteners on the back fender of my bicycle kind of rusted off and it’s kind of flopping around. Anything I can do to fix it on my own? Or should I bring it to a bicycle shop for repair?

  18. Just learned that they actually teach you to crack open the car window when you stop in front of the railway crossing. What does that do?
