Question about Hakone Free Pass

Hi everyone, this is my first time posting so go easy on me. I’ll be coming back to Japan after 4 years. The last time I abused the crap out of the JR. Pass and went south and north and everywhere in between in 3 weeks. This time I’ll be coming with my parents in their early 60s (healthy), my sister, and fiance.

Me and my fiance have a different intinary than my parents and sister, but we both plan to be doing the day trip at Hakone together and they will stay behind for the onsen. For my parents and sister they will be traveling by Shinkansen (JR pass) to Odawara and for Fiance and I, we will not be activating our past just yet and therefore will be using the romance car from Shinjuku. (Staying in Kanda)

So my question is it seems that you cannot buy the pass from the ticket machine at the moment like what I did last time in 2020, but the customer service center doesn’t open until 8 :00 which is 30 minutes past the earliest romance car we’re trying to get onto. Without using that stupid app which we really don’t want to bother, What is our option in terms of getting passes for us (Shinjuku) and also for parents + sister (arriving Odawara) without the app?

I’m thinking right now we will swing by Odayuku service desk in Shinjuku the day before to buy the passes and then the romancar tickets, does that work?

  1. You can buy the Pass at a machine at Odawara station. I was there in mid April and bought it then. Don’t know about Shinjuku.
