What does it mean to overstay?

I have been going through the subreddit and I have a question that is probably very dumb. When people say they have overstayed their visa, do they mean that they stayed past the date written on their zairyu card ?

Yes. That’s exactly what they mean. People often use the term “visa” to refer to “status of residency”.

  2. For mid to long term residents, Yes… but with one small caveat. If they submit their extension of period of stay or a change in status of residency application, then they get a “2 month extension” or until a failed application has been notified, which ever comes first.

For those without a zairyu card, then they would be overstaying should they stay past the date stated on the visa in their passport

  3. Yes, it means they are illegally staying over their residence card date.

Note: During renewal of your status of residence, you get a 2 month extension, but it’s easy to check as they put a stamp on your card.
