Sushi rice without vinegar and sugar

Hello guys!

I wanted to make some sushi at home but because of the calories I prefer to not add vinegar and sugar. I know it changes the taste but it’s fine. The question is:

How many calories is plain sushi rice?

Normally 100g of rice is only 130kcal. I bought sushi rice and it says that for 100g it is 352kcal

I searched online and there is a lot of answers… Some say sushi rice is the same calories as normal (without the vinegar and sugar), some say that even without the seasoning the rice is still higher in kcal…

So could you guys help me out?

Is sushi rice really this high on kcal even if not seasoned with vinegar and sugar?

  1. Sushi rice is just stating that this type of rice is good for making sushi.

Shorter grain, medium starch levels. That kind of thing.

You don’t add the other stuff until after you cook the rice, so it’d be very weird if it was already in uncooked rice.

  2. The amount of calories in the sugar and rice vinegar combined is going to be like <10% of the calories of sushi rice.

Im pretty meticulous about my calorie intake but if I’m already having sushi imo this adjustment is not worth the sacrifice of making less-desirable rice. You might be able to get away with using a different sweetener like stevia but you’re only saving a few cal

  3. – the sushi rice you bought is accurate in terms of calories. 352 cal for 100g of dry, uncooked rice is standard & not more than any regular rice.
    – what you use as ‘sushi rice’ or most other rices are not significantly higher in calories than regular rice. Most hover around 160cal per 45g dry. Please do not worry so so much
    – as for your conception that 100g of cooked rice is 130cal, that is vaguely accurate but it is better to measure calories off of the dry weight before cooking. Rice can absorb different amounts of water, causing different weights.
    – vinegar holds very little calories, but you may substitute sugar with something if you like. You need these flavors to make sushi.

  4. White rice is pretty high in calories. It’s fairly digestible and it’s relatively simple carbohydrates that convert to sugar readily

  5. You are confusing cooked and uncooked rice. As a general rule, 1 cup of uncooked rice will equal about 3 cups of cooked rice.

Vinegar has low calories and you can use a sugar substitute but honestly sugar and rice are the same level of carbs.
