  1. We have those sushi kiosks and at a few stores around here. They have $5 sushi Fridays and Sundays. We haven’t been disappointed.

ETA: someone pointed out it has to be the kiosk with the people actually making it. Do not make the mistake of getting the sushi from the deli or cold case that is not freshly made. Those are made offsite in a factory, frozen, then thawed. Yuck yuck yuck. AFC Sushi or Tsunami Sushi is the name of the kiosks where people are making on-site and that’s what you want.

  2. This is one of my fav. Sushi’s to get from my grocery store. Absolutely fantastic!

  3. Most grocery sushi I’ve had is pretty good, honestly. Maybe not the selection or quality as a dedicated restaurant, sure, but for the price it’s pretty good. We have a poke bowl my local grocery store guy makes for like $12 and it’s awesome.

  4. My only problem with grocery-store sushi is 1) it’s cold, and 2) it’s so rice-heavy. I have great experience with it if the chefs are there and I can get it made-to-order.

  5. The main issue I have with grocery store sushi is the rice. I feel they use colder than needed fridges, and the rice dries out and get hard / loses that nice texture it should normally have. Letting the sushi sit out doesn’t help. Other than that, the ingredients typically aren’t too bad and yes I agree – does fine in a pinch and I’m not afraid to grab some.

  6. Ralphs here in San Diego has contracted with some amazing people to offer damn good sushi and I love it!

  7. I made sushi in a local grocery store for 6 months or so between restaurant jobs. I was the lead sushi chef and I took the job very seriously. I coached the other people and brought the quality of the rolls up a little bit from where it was before. The ingredients were always great. The verity was bad compared to a restaurant but I understand why.

Obviously our product wasn’t as good as I have made at restaurants but I was proud of our product. We made some pretty damn good sushi. It’s definitely hit and miss from store to store but in general it’s worth the cost if you’re craving sushi.

Always check the date and time on the label. If it’s been in the cooling display for 4 hours or more then the rice will be hard and it won’t taste that great. If you can get it within an hour or two it’s pretty dang good though. I heard some people say they microwave it for 15-20 seconds and it makes a world of difference but I never tried that myself.

A lot of times the chef won’t mine making a custom roll for you (if they have a way to price it out and are allowed to). I was always happy to make the customer a custom roll. I’d definitely recommend this route if the person doesn’t mind. getting it fresh never refrigerated is by far the best option.

That looks bomb though! I’d love to eat that.

  8. Some kiosks use machine to make them, hence they ain’t as good as sushi made by hands.

  9. I was just diagnosed with Celiac disease and still haven’t had sushi. Scared af to even try it because restaurant workers habitually don’t listen and I get so violently ill. 🙁 Have to learn to make it myself.

  10. Is that Snowfox? My local Kroger has that distributor and it’s nowhere near as fancy as this.

  11. used to absolutely love the grocery store sushi from the store near my house.

at least once a week I’d go pick up a couple packages.

Then a few weeks ago I got bad food poisoning from it, and haven’t been back. Someone didn’t wash their hands before making it I’m guessing.

too bad, cause it was indeed tasty and convenient.

  12. Grocery store sushi is not the best sushi I’ve ever had, but it’s also not terrible, I like to pick it up occasionally on nights when I’m home alone. It’s made fresh by someone in the store behind the sushi counter, so not as weird and sketchy as some people might think.

  13. Grocery market sushi can be pretty good, yeah. My issue is how much more expensive it is for lower quality, on average

  14. Most grocery store sushi I’ve seen isn’t as fancy as that, aswell. What store you get it from?

  15. This looks great, i used to get my sushi at Lidl in Germany, It was never more than a day old

  16. The Raley’s by where I used to live had top tier sushi for a grocery store. If I got served it in a restaurant I’d be pretty mad, but being able to walk in at 9pm and get sushi immediately was always amazing

  17. In my Sam’s club there is a sushi stand and dumpling stand made fresh daily and it is amazing

  18. We have a sushi chef in most of our local stores. It’s typically simple but very fresh and well made. They have a Wednesday special that is so cheap, it’s almost a crime not to pick up and now my kids know that Wednesday apps before dinner will be sushi. There is no way I could ever make it for the amount of money I spend and it’s honestly, not terrible.

  19. dude I hit my grocery store up about 1x a week for their afc sushi, its good. Sometimes I get there when they just got done making some 🙂

  20. The only complaint I EVER have about it is that the rice is a little hard sometimes. I prefer my sushi rice about room temp.

  21. For sure. McDonald’s is also delicious. It doesn’t mean it’s good. It also doesn’t mean it’s bad. You do you, just keep an eye on those time stickers.

  22. I love my local grocers sushi. They have sales on Wednesdays and it’s great. Should get myself some now.

  23. It can be pretty good, but the issue is the rice texture. Sushi rice should not be cold.

  24. Sometimes. I had sushi from 7-eleven in Japan and I liked it. I guess freshness matters.

  25. The real problem with grocery store sushi is the parent company (AFC) and its ties to a fanatical cult. I still eat it though.

  26. The sushi at gas stations in Hawaii was better than almost anything I’ve ever had in the Midwest.

  27. Can someone tell me if store bought is really safe? I love sushi but grew up with a “raw fish” taboo and came to love sushi away from home but was made terrified of the idea of buying sushi from a store instead of a restaurant. Just wondering if someone could put my lingering fears to rest
