Need help for my bucket list – An onsent with Mt Fuji as the backdrop

I can’t quite pinpoint where this desire originated, perhaps from watching an anime or a Japanese drama.

But I always really wanted to go to Japan and experiencing a warm outdoorsy onsen (or similar) that I can relax in, looking at Mt Fuji while I am in the onsen. And to make it even more magical, it’d be snowing around me.

Now I have a chance to make it actually happen – I will be going to Japan at the end of year. I’ll be travelling in mid to late December (around Christmas time). And I’ve been looking into accommodation and onsens that can make this happen, but I don’t think I’m looking at the right places. Does anyone know which onsen might offer me a similar experience? Doesn’t have to be outdoorsy but I want an onsen to have a Mt Fuji view…

  2. I remember that the Hotel Green Plaza Hakone has a bath with Fuji view. I think it may be only the women’s bath for that one. I haven’t stayed here but I considered it for that reason.

Of course I should add that it is an “advertised” Fuji view. Fuji views cannot be guaranteed due to the weather. The worst time for viewing is summer and the best is winter.

  3. There is some ryokan with s view in Hakone, but not that many as there is mountain around, you would have more choice in Kawaguchiko. Then it depends if you want to put the extra budget of a private onsen in room or you are ok with the public onsen of the ryokan.

I stayed in Lake Yamanakako and visited this onsen. Three indoor baths and two outdoor. It was cloudy on my day but I enjoyed this area overall.
Guesthouse recommendation if you stay here:
Murabito Guesthouse is amazing and some rooms also have a view of Fuji right from the balcony. Super amazing guesthouse, very cozy and lovely hosts.

Also, the onsen is less than ten minutes walking from this guesthouse.

  5. Kozantei Ubuya

    Kukuna

    FuFu Kawaguchiko

all 3 have private onsens in your room that face Mt. Fuji

  6. Just go on a deep dive in the Fujikawaguchiko area; there are literally dozens of hotels with private in-room baths and onsens that have views of Mt Fuji.

If you go during winter it will likely have snow around, however there’s a not unsubstantial chance that the view of the mountain could be obscured by the weather.

The real challenge is once you experience it, and it falls somewhere between meeting and not meeting your expectations, what’s next for you?

  7. Are you me? Because you just described one of the many reasons I wanna go to Japan, lol. I have never been to Japan before and will be going next week.

I will be in Hakone from July 19th to the 21st and staying at Hotel de Yama. I would like to be able to see Mt. Fuji while relaxing in an onsen, but I don’t know if it is possible. What I DO know is that this hotel is right on Lake Ashi, about 16 minutes away from the Hakone Open-air museum, 6 minute walk to Heiwa no Tori, and 9 minute walk to Hakone Shrine.

Mt. Fuji is about 56km from this hotel. I’ve seen some pictures posted online from other people that have a mountain in the background, but I do not know if it is Mt. Fuji, Mt. Hakone, or any of the other surrounding Mts.

  8. I found two popular ryokan in the Fujikawaguchiko area that both boast views of Fuji from the rooms (and some rooms have private onsens that face it as well).

I booked (for October) Hotel Konansou. Another one that caught my eye as it says every room faces Mt. Fuji is Ubuya.

As I haven’t gone on my trip yet, I can’t vouch for either, but figured I’d give the suggestions anyway. 🙂

  9. I hate to be the one to burst your bubble but the last few years it hasn’t snowed much around Mt Fuji
You’ll get the snow capped Mt Fuji but the odds of they’re being snow on the ground or actively snowing are extremely slim.

  10. I am there now. DM me for the name. It’s at Lake Yamana, closest and highest lake next to Fuji. No tourists here now. Not one that I have seen.

  11. I seem to recall reading that your best bet for was to check the weather the week you are going and go then. Even if you go in winter there’s no guarantee it won’t be a cloudy day. Then if that’s the sole reason for me going I’d be rather upset.

  12. The view at kawaguchiko is the best. Rest of the lakes pale in comparison to it. Ubuya is usually packed, good luck getting a reservation.

  13. Hakone or Lake Kawaguchiko, but beware that you could spend $$$ on a room with private onsen and Fuji-san is not showing that day due to fog. Very common.
