Can Japan’s legacy (culture, customs, people, businesses, art, etc.) live on in other countries if the population collapses?

In the worst case scenario where Japan does not recover from declining birth rate, can it’s legacy be preserved in other countries?

  1. Yeah, that is not what they mean by population collapse…

Japanese people aren’t going to simply disappear.

There are just going to be economic and logistical issues because the ratio of old people to young people will be too high if the birth rate stays as low as it is.

  2. Do you predict that Japan’s population will decline to such a point where literally no one lives there anymore and the entire country becomes reclaimed by nature?

I’m thinking that it will decrease for a while, but level out at some equilibrium point. It could also increase again in the unlikely event of economic recovery (maybe if the government changes and decides to help out the lower and middle classes instead of just the wealthy).

  3. It can’t. Unless Japan manages to export its customs to neighbouring countries it’s impossible. That seems highly unlikely to occur given the surrounding countries tend to have a different religious, ethnic and cultural background. Why would the Filipinos, for example, adapt Buddhist-Shinto cultural practices?

  4. I don’t see their culture living on in other countries.

Japanese Culture in Hawaii, for example, is diluted and mixed with local culture and customers. The same would happen elsewhere. You might get some remnants of their habits but that is about all imho.

  5. There is Japanese diaspora around the world, but we also have things like museums to preserve artifacts.

Realistically, the culture will change as more immigrants come in and the country changes to reflect that new plurality.

  6. Japanese people aren’t going extinct. Ever. And a low birth rate is mainly caused by women’s education. If Japan was really concerned, they can just roll back education for a generation and wait for birth rates to rise a bit.

  7. We aren’t going anywhere. Please worry about your own culture and “legacy”.
