Traveling with LGBT spouse

Hello all, I am trying to figure out whether I could bring my spouse with me to Japan. I am marked as F on my passport and they are marked as X. I understand it is easier for straight married couples to live in Japan together through the JET program. I just wondered if anyone had any experience with this? Whether teaching english in a rural part of Japan with my nonbinary partner would be a bad idea? Thank you for any thoughts!

  1. The main issue is that if you do not represent as a straight married couple, your spouse won’t be able to get a dependant visa since Japan does not recognize same-sex or anything other than straight F\M marriages. Even though your spouse is non-binary, it will depend on what their original sex was listed as.

Otherwise, if you’re able to get a dependant visa for your spouse, I don’t see any reason not to bring them!
