Language School 150 Hour/N5 Requirement?

Hi All,

I’ve been preparing to attend language school in Oct 2022. I’ve gotten pretty much everything situated, but I just noticed on the GaijinPot website that if you are aged 30 and older, you’re required to show proof of 150 hours of Japanese study or an N5 certificate. The person I’m working with at GaijinPot hasn’t mentioned this at all, and I hope this isn’t the case, because I definitely do not meet that requirement at the current time.

Some background, I’m coming from the U.S. and will be 31 by the time I move. I also will be attending one of the ISI Language Schools. It says some schools don’t require this, and I hope ISI is one that doesn’t lol It will set me back quite a bit.

Does anyone have any insight on this?

  1. I was over 30 when I attended a language school in 2019. There was no requirement for certification or number of hours studied.

With the situation being what it has been over the past couple years, I doubt any schools would have this requirement.

  2. It is not the school needs it,in fact,it is the Japanese government requires it.
But the Japanese government doesn’t just require JLPT N5,other tests such as ‘NAT test’,’J-test’,’JLCT’,are OK too.
Use the app ‘Duolingo’, it may just take 3 months to pass the level 5 of JLCT, and it will help for the requirement.

  3. It’s required by immigration to receive the Visa. The measure was put into effect to prevent illegal working under false pretenses.

  4. Mind if I ask what kind of job is this at Gaijinpot? And would you know if they offer any remote work?
